Students living in Humber Residence have been reluctant to use the Humber Arboretum at night with the lack of lighting in place.
Many students who frequently visit the arboretum during the day opt to avoid the park after sunset with personal safety concerns.
Eveline Mitchell a third-year student who lives in residence has voiced her concern for her safety, “As a woman, I find it terrifying and I feel like there are so many places that light doesn’t touch, so I try to avoid it as much as possible at night.”
The lack of lighting at night is a risk, that many students don’t want to chance by going out in the dark.
Another student suggests having additional lights added to the park to ensure people’s peace of mind. “It would be better if they had the whole park lit up like it would make everyone feel safer at night.” Owen Graham voiced his opinions.
There are currently no plans in place to add additional lights to the Humber Arboretum. But student’s hope are set high for a safer environment for their learning which includes surrounding areas such as the 250-acre park right next door.
